Cuba Collector and Author Visits Smathers Libraries for Two-Day Event

The Smathers Libraries recently held two events that showcased Emilio Cueto’s extensive research on Cuban heritage and global influence. His presentation, “In the Footsteps of José Martí Around the World,” explored the worldwide legacy of Cuba’s National Hero, presenting a visual journey through over 340 cities that honor Martí through monuments, art, literature, and institutions. The second event celebrated Cueto’s latest book, Inspired by Cuba! Cuba on the Labels, which examines how Cuba and its famous cigars are marketed using labels produced outside the island that imply the cigars are Cuban. Featuring over 300 reproductions, the book is part of Cueto’s Inspired by Cuba! series, which also explores Cuba’s presence in foreign postage stamps and ceramics.

The second event celebrated the publication of Inspired by Cuba! Cuba on the Labels, a book by Emilio Cueto, that examines how Cuba and Cuban cigars are depicted in cigar labels made outside the island. Featuring over 300 detailed label reproductions, the book showcases Cuba as imagined by foreign cigar label makers. Cueto, who has spent decades collecting and researching these labels, provides the most comprehensive study of its kind. This is the third book in his Inspired by Cuba! series, following works on Cuba-themed postage stamps and ceramics.
