Focused Attention is finally home.
In 2016, the A. H. Burnett Foundation donated a 430-pound bronze alligator sculpture to the UF Libraries. Created by Florida artist David Price, the bull gator is nine feet long and made of clay. For over nine years, the work, titled “Focused Attention,” lingered on the third floor of Library West, waiting for the university colonnade renovation to begin, where he could enjoy the Florida sunshine and smiles of the University of Florida students. He now resides in front of the colonnade on a solid native Florida Keystone limestone base, facing the Plaza of the Americas.
One of the Libraries greatest priorities is meeting the growing demand for inviting, flexible spaces where students can study, gather, and connect. The transformation of the university colonnade, featuring the brand new garden terraces, answers that need. With 50 new spots for comfortable seating, charging stations and a welcoming setting anchored by the beloved Focused Attention alligator sculpture. Investments such as this in the Libraries help enrich the academic environment and shape the learning experience for generations of students.
Patrick Reakes, Interim Dean of University Libraries, is excited about the renovations. “I know there are a lot of people like me who like to sit outside, so I’m really excited about what the space offers. You can get a drink or bite to eat at Starbucks and walk directly out into an inviting garden terrace for studying or socializing!”
A private showing of the sixth university gator sculpture was held for the Burnett Foundation on Tuesday, August 12. The official unveiling for campus will take place at 12:30 p.m. on August 21, the first day of fall classes.
