Edugators Wind Down in the Education Library Relaxation Room

The Education Library is one of six on-campus branch libraries at the University of Florida. Located in Norman Hall, this library serves students across disciplines in an intimate two-story facility loaded with computers, study nooks and a makery space. In response to growing awareness of student stress and the importance of mental health resources in academic settings, the Smathers Libraries worked to develop a “relaxation room” for the Education Library.

“We recognize that learning is most effective when students’ cognitive and emotional needs are supported. By integrating a wellness-focused space into the library we show our commitment to student success,” Rachael Elrod, Ed.D, Director of the Education Library, said.

Completed in the spring of 2025, the Relaxation Room is a quiet and calm room that offers a low-stimulation environment for stress reduction, mindfulness and mental resets. Whether a student needs a moment to decompress between classes or a quiet pause during their busy day, the Relaxation Room provides a supportive alternative to traditional study spaces. The room was thoughtfully furnished with a rocking glider chair, a bean bag chair and a soft rug set against calming blue walls, creating a comfortable and soothing atmosphere. Additional features include inspirational posters, fidget toys, a weighted blanket, a dimmable multicolor lamp and a large round coffee table that together support relaxation, sensory regulation and quiet reflection.

The Education Library’s Relaxation Room is just one of the many ways the UF Libraries continue to expand their role beyond traditional collections and services. The room reflects an understanding of libraries as places that support the whole student, academically, professionally and personally. Students are encouraged to visit the Relaxation Room, experience the space firsthand and make it a part of their regular routine. Through initiatives like this, the Education Library affirms that well-being is not separate from learning, but essential to it.

“I’m sensitive to fluorescent lights so this was soooo appreciated, I am also returning to grad school as an older student and using the room has really helped with nervousness of starting the new classes and school workload. I wish there were more rooms like this on campus. I also appreciate the single occupancy to reserve the room,” a student replied to a survey about the room.

Other comments echoed the purpose of the space: “I was extremely stressed and needed a space to calm down. The relaxation room gave me a chance to ground and regroup. I was able to do breathing exercises and calm down.”

The Relaxation Room was made possible through collaboration between Education Library staff, campus partners and student advocates. Feedback from students played a key role in shaping the space, ensuring it meets real needs. This collaborative effort was formally acknowledged by the University’s Student Senate, which passed a resolution recognizing the Relaxation Room as a meaningful contribution to student well-being and campus life. Since opening, the room has been booked 654 times for a total of 1,102 hours.

The Relaxation Room is available to all students during regular Education Library hours. It is intended for both group and individual use. Like other library study rooms on campus, it can be reserved online for a block of two hours at a time. If the room is empty, it can be used on a first come, first served basis with the understanding that if someone with a reservation shows up, they would need to allow the person with the reservation to use the space.
